A Study of shadow & light

The circular movement of the two beaters leave a pattern in the dough: the mass between them is compressed while everything else around them is pushed away in concentric cirles.

The lamp resulting from these observations consists of two overlapping volumes. Each of the volumes is built with three white hoops that are non-parallel to each other. 30 meters of black electrical cable are wrapped around these hoops, giving the form a semblance of volume.

The cable starts with the bulb fitting and ends with the plug, making it a self-sustaining lamp: the cable gives the lamp it’s shape, stability and electricity. Since there are two separate light sources the shadows on the wall get a more interesting quality. Instead of just one shadow you can see a graphic consisting of several different gray tones in overlay.

Series information

This series of hanging lamps is the product of a joint thesis at the Hochschule RheinMain in the area of interior design.

Here, the projected shadows and lighting effects are the actual focus. They interact with the space around them, painting landscapes on walls, the ceiling and floor.

The shapes of the lamps are developed from a sequence of motions chosen from the baking process.

Five possible steps within this process were captured as photos, these were analyzed, abstracted and interpreted into lamps.

The mixing of ingredients, pouring of dough from a container, accidental burning in the oven, subsequent removal of the burnt spots and final frosting became a family of lamps:
