    SCRAPE

A Study of shadow & light

This lamp symbolizes the »damage control« after the burning process: scraping off all the burnt parts. What is hardly recognizable to the naked eye is captured on camera: hundreds of tiny black crumbs flying through the air in the direction dictated by the scraping motion.

To freeze this moment 3-dimensionally, a fine, black aluminium mesh is modelled to display the full extent of the flying particles. The particles are put in place by filling only certain gaps in the mesh with black varnish.

The shadow this lamp produces is as unexpected as it is mesmerizing: an expansive, 3-dimensional landscape of elevations and depressions.

This series of hanging lamps is the product of a joint thesis at the Hochschule RheinMain in the area of interior design.

Here, the projected shadows and lighting effects are the actual focus. They interact with the space surrounding them, painting landscapes on walls, the ceiling and floor.

The shapes of the lamps are developed from a sequence of motions chosen from the baking process.

Five possible steps within this process were captured as photos, these were analyzed, abstracted and interpreted into lamps.

The mixing of ingredients, pouring of dough from a container, accidental burning in the oven, subsequent removal of the burnt spots and final frosting became a family of lamps:

MIX, POUR, BURN, SCRAPE and FROST.
